The goal for this assignment is to use our previous composition and revise the design to look like a garden.
The entrance is clearly marked by two squares that stick out of the lowest side of the garden. You walk in looking left seeing an element sticking out of the earth, and on the opposite side you see an element sinking down into the earth. Due to the Ying and Yang pattern of the four elements, one feels harmony and a relationship between these elements. The four elements are perfectly spaced to provide a clear path to travel on.
When the path opens up you look directly ahead your eye sees a dip and a sudden rise that leads you to a small object on top of a hill. The object is perfectly positioned to being half on the hill, and half hanging off. Your eye slowly drops down to a small dip bellow the circle a parallel line that travels limitless to the right. The small dip’s width isn’t that large, making it look like a small crack in an imaginary road that you have created. You follow that path and realize that it leads to a landing that can reach the small circle.
When reaching the top of the circle, you look down on an open plain that contains the entrance that you once walked into. The circulation of this road has now become less linear and you realize that you can climb back down to where you originally started, or start a new journey up to the highest point of the garden.
Walking up with the same gradual incline as you encountered before, you find yourself staring at four squares that are similar to the ones at the entrance. Yet, you notice that the pushing and pulling of the elements are in the opposite order as the ones at the entrance. You feel the gardens design come into a full circle. While standing on the tallest layer of this garden, one feels a sort of accomplishment from finishing that journey. You realize the feeling of overwhelming calmness and simplicity while gazing around the blank planes. Then, all at once, a small sense of wonder overwhelms you due to all the room left for you to embark on.
The next images shown below, where down to revamp the design and create more divergent thinking. Therefore, the craft isn't as well done. Yet, this made me rethink my assignment, and I began to add and remove new elements and lines in order to add more of a journey to the design. The diagrams are supposed to show ideas, so it is not to scale nor done with a ruler.
This is the Final for Assignment 7. The Garden of Shadows took a lot of time, but I really liked the unity of the design, and the emotions evoked while looking at the design. The following images are a MDF model, a pavilion, axon, plan, and diagrams.
