This year began with the basic precedent study, then continued to a holocaust memorial, and then transcended into a synagogue located in downtown Knoxville. The idea of this first semester was to begin to use applications like Rhino, Auto-Cad, and Photoshop to start being able to represent our ideas better in the design process.
When first given any ritual space, you have to go back and put yourself, as the architect, within their shoes in order to create the best architecture for their needs. Therefore, we visited a local synagogue, and talked to the Rabi and quickly learned that a synagogue is not just a place to worship, it is a place for the jewish community to come together, eat, celebrate, create music, and gain their religious grounding all at once.
With that notion, I used that basic knowledge and applied them to two buildings. One being strictly used for celebration, ceremonies, small teaching rooms, and offices. While the other building, completely different in nature, presented itself as a sculptural piece two stories high used strictly for religious practices. The two buildings are combined by a roof garden promoting this idea of religious growth and community coming together as one.
